What causes nighttime teeth grinding?

If you find yourself or a loved one grinding and clenching their teeth at night, they might be affected by one of the following underlying factors.

    • Stress and Anxiety: Stress building from events in your personal life, work, or relationships are often the leading cause of nighttime grinding or clenching. Techniques to reduce stress, such as physical exercise, meditation, or more relaxation time, can help lower stress levels.
    • Abnormal Bite: In some cases, dental or orthodontic treatments can correct your bite and reduce teeth grinding. If you are concerned about your bite, speak to Dr. Dimitrov about treatment options that can help to fix your bite.
    • Missing Teeth: If you have teeth that are missing, the gaps in your mouth can change how your teeth close together. The best solution is to explore tooth restoration treatments ( Filings, Crowns, Bridges) to fill in the gap, helping to reduce the risk of teeth grinding and damaging other teeth.
    • Sleep Apnea: Ineffective sleep patterns can cause a role in teeth grinding. For some patients treating their sleep apnea corrected their grinding or clenching problems. Speak to Dr. Dimitrov today if you think you are experiencing sleep apnea.
