Dental Crowns In St. Albert
Protect Your Teeth Or Cover Broken Ones
A Dental crown, often referred to as the “tooth’s helmet,” is a tooth-shaped cap placed on a damaged tooth. A crown strengthens the tooth and protects the tooths structure. The crown is cemented on and can only be removed by a dentist. A crown is ideal for people with broken teeth or who experience many cavities.

What Can Dental Crowns Fix?
Dental Crowns can fix numerous dental problems – here are a few ways Dr. Dimitrov may use a dental crown
- As part of a cosmetic dentistry procedure to restore the alignment and appearance of your teeth
- As the finishing touches for dental implants
- When a large section is removed from a tooth due to cavities and is replaced with fillings
- As a cap to cover teeth that are badly discoloured, mis-shaped, damaged or broken in two and needs to be held together.
- As a covering for a tooth that is worn down, in the case of grinding or bruxism.
- To fill the gaps between teeth to give a more even appearance to the dental structure.
- After a root canal procedure
What Are The Different Types of Dental Crowns
The material option will depend on your needs or wants and on the clinical situation
1) Ceramic Crowns
Porcelain Crowns – Porcelain Crowns are often material that is used to restore the front teeth due to the colour blending of natural teeth. The porcelain material may be brittle under heavy biting and can be highly resistant to wear.
Zirconia Crowns – Zirconia is a type of ceramic, but it is stronger and more durable than porcelain and tends to cause less stress and damage to the tooth it sits on as opposed to its Porcelain counterpart.
Empress Crowns – Empress Crowns are a type of porcelain with no metal base and is made up of full ceramic. As a result, the Empress crowns provide ideal colour and translucency.
Emax Crowns – Emax Crowns are dental crowns made of a unique ceramic material that is durable and aesthetically appealing. Emax crowns are used to restore the integrity of teeth damaged due to decay and are used after a root canal procedure.
2) Gold Alloys
Gold alloys are comprised of gold, copper and other metals that provide solid materials for the top of the tooth structure. Gold is resistant to wear and fracture and does not wear away the teeth it meets. In addition, gold crowns are highly biocompatible with any gum tissue.
3) Metal Crowns
Metal crowns are exceptionally strong since they are made of stainless steel or various metal alloys. The drawback is that the colour of the metal will not match the colour of your existing teeth. Typically metal crowns are used for the molars in the very back of a patients mouth.
